2-Day Intensive Workshop: Needle Felted Wool Landscape
Instructed by Jaana Mattson
Saturday, January 7th, 2023 From 10am - 4pm
Sunday, January 8th, 2023 From 10am - 3pm
Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 From 12pm - 4pm
Wednesday, January 11th, 2023 From 12pm - 4pm
All levels are welcome in this class, anyone from a hobbyist with a short attention span to a professional artist can learn, have fun and be impressed with themselves.
In this 2-day intensive class we begin with the basic elements; different types of wool and techniques for application using landscape photos for inspiration. A simple technique, needle felting is a dry method of creating non-woven fabric by interlocking wisps of dyed wool fiber using a notched needle. The organic textures and impressionistic colors of blended wool offer a very painterly approach to textiles, beautifully suited to landscape.
Over the course of the 2-day session we learn with our hands about different types of wool roving and experiment with a variety of needles and needle holders. During the first day of class we will all work from the same images to take a step by step approach as we learn to “build” the landscape from background and shadow to the highlights of the surface. Hand-outs and discussion will help illuminate the basic principles of composition and the use of color and color-theory to produce a dynamic landscape. During Day 2 each student will select their own image from personal or provided photos and work through the idea with guidance from the instructor.
All necessary materials are provided with the $25 material fee, due in class. These include a kit for each student with a range of dyed wool roving in the landscape palette, felting needles, acrylic felt pinned to a foam block and printed materials outlining tools, fibers and resources. Additionally, each student will have use of an adjustable Ott light to mimic natural daylight for best color accuracy and clarity while working.
Our classroom is at Artista Bottega, a magically creative and quirky environment covered in murals, chandeliers and historic brick walls off of W 7th St in St Paul. The studio/classroom entrance is from the alley, and there is nearby street parking on Daly just north of W 7th.

In class, we sing, dance, play instruments, laugh, and explore music and movement in a relaxed yet focused setting. Flexible environment for new students and continuing students alike.

With all the right colors in your roving kit we will build the scene from sky to forest floor using surprising layers of color to create an atmospheric effect. We will complete the piece during class, working the composition step-by-step. It is helpful, but not necessary, to have a basic understanding of tools and materials.
The materials are all provided with the $25 material fee, due at the start of class.
Students do not need to bring any tools or materials to class.
Prerequisite: Previous needle felting experience is very helpful. For a thorough introduction to the tools, techniques and materials it is recommended to begin with an introductory workshop, however it is not necessary to complete this in-class project.
